  1. Smile policy
We welcome all kinds of travelers and the group dynamic of each trip is different but also part of what makes the trip so amazing. You should be able to treat everyone in the group as well as the locals with respect and kindness.

    No complainers
Our goal is for everyone to have fun and a trip of a lifetime. On our trips, you should be able to let the small stuff go and exercise flexibility when things don’t go according to plan. If you are a traveler who finds fault with everything and complains about the little things, then our trips are not right for you. Come with an open mind and adventurous spirit, and you’ll have the trip of a lifetime!

    Egypt is not like home
Expect things to be different than what you’re used to back home and remember that it’s all a part of traveling and experiencing new places! For example, water pressure, bed and pillow firmness, and room temperature may be different than what you’re used to back home. You may also find cultural and social norms very different than your own. Also, Wifi may be spotty, slow, or even unavailable in certain remote areas.

    Trip leader
Your trip leader will help you have an unforgettable experience and can answer questions & offer suggestions. He/She will always try to go above and beyond to help you have an amazing trip but is not your personal assistant. Travelers should exercise a certain level of self-sufficiency and independence on our trips. We also suggest tipping those who went out of their way to help you, especially your trip leader who will be with you every day throughout the entire trip.

    Semi-independent trip
Our trips are designed for the semi-independent traveler. If you choose not to participate in any of the included activities, you are responsible for organizing your own activities. Your trip leader can offer recommendations for alternative activities but it is up to you to make reservations for extra activities. Additionally, you’re free to arrive before or depart after the trip but pre-/post-tour plans, accommodation, transport, etc. are yours to arrange. We do not offer assistance with any plans outside of the trip dates.

  2. This trip requires a low level of physical fitness. If you’re not feeling up for an activity, you’re welcome to explore on your own.

To participate in this trip you should be able to:

    • Walk 1 – 2 miles throughout the dayunassisted, up and down stairs, over unpaved or cobblestone surfaces, with and without an incline, and on rough terrain.
    • Be comfortable on your feet for up to 4 hoursunassisted, walking and standing, indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.
    • Carry your luggage from the taxi/van to the hotel.
    • Get in and out of a van and bus without assistance.
  3. Each group consists of 4 – 14 travelers. We prefer small group travel because based on our experience, large groups are less easily able to integrate into society and generally have less authentic contact with the locals.

A small group number also means that group members will receive more personal treatment from the trip leader who can more thoroughly attend to the needs of each person. Small groups are also more mobile and flexible as travel plans can be more easily altered en route.

  4. Most of our travelers are in their late 30s to late 60s/early 70s and most are solo travelers. Generally, we get a good mix of diverse people and every trip is unique thanks to the group dynamic.

The minimum age on our trips is 18.

Everyone is welcome on our trips; male/female, LGBTQIA+/straight, and solos/couples.

Check out pictures from our previous trips to get an idea of the group dynamic by clicking HERE.

  5. While most daily activities are already included in the trip price, you will have some free time, and the trip leader can recommend and/or help arrange any activity that might interest you. Activities in your free time are not included in the trip cost and are at your own expense.

There is an optional hot air balloon ride in Luxor for $120 USD per person. You can sign up during the trip with the trip leader and pay in cash or by credit card.

  6. Airport pick-up from Cairo airport (CAI) is included in this trip*. We will collect your flight information and arrange your airport pick-up. Upon arrival, an English-speaking representative will meet you and assist you through immigration and toward your driver. This will be noted in detail in the Pre-Departure Notes, which we will email you about 2 weeks before the trip start date.

Airport drop-off is not included on this trip. The departure airport is Cairo (CAI). The hotel reception can help you arrange a taxi to the airport.

*Airport pick-up is included only if you arrive on Day 1. If you are not arriving on Day 1, airport pick-up is not included but you can take a taxi at the airport or pre-arrange an airport pick-up with a transport company such as Welcome Pickups or one that you may find online.

  7. Currently, passport holders from the USA, Australia, the UK, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand, and Ireland must have a visa to travel within Egypt. For our trip, you’ll need a single-entry visa, valid for 3 months from the date of issue and entitling you to a total stay of 30 days in the country per entry.

We recommend our travelers get a visa on arrival (VOA) at the Cairo airport as airport pick-up and visa assistance are included in the trip cost. You will need 2 passport photos and $25 USD in exact change. We will email you before the trip regarding the details of the visa on arrival.

Otherwise, you can get an e-visa online before arrival here: Official Egypt E-Visa Portal. We do not recommend this option for our travelers as past customers have had issues with this. If you do not meticulously fill out the form, your application will be denied and no refunds will be issued.

As a general rule, passports should have at least six months of validity when traveling internationally. Most countries will not permit a traveler to enter unless the passport is set to expire at least six months after the final day of travel.

  8. The official currency of Egypt is the Egyptian pound (EGP).

Find out the live mid-market rate for your currency by using a currency converter online.

  9. We strongly recommend using ATMs while in Egypt as they usually offer the best exchange rates. The easiest way is to withdraw some money from the ATM at the airport upon arrival and throughout your trip. Your trip leader can point you in the right direction of an ATM or exchange office.

Some ATMs have an EGP 2,000 limit. However, look for a Banque du Caire machine if you wish to draw more than that.

It’s important to tell your bank and/or credit card company that you’ll be using your card in Egypt. Some banks block transactions in foreign countries if they haven’t been forewarned of your travel plans.

Also, it is always a good idea to carry some cash on you in case your bank puts a hold on your ATM card.

  10. Credit and debit cards are not widely used outside of the cities in Egypt. However, in high-end establishments such as expensive shops, restaurants, and hotels, you shouldn’t have a problem paying with your card, though American Express and Discover aren’t commonly accepted. Anywhere else, it’s advisable to carry cash in case you come across a retailer that cannot take card payments.

  11. While tipping isn’t mandatory in Egypt, it is customary. In restaurants, taxis, and personal services, tips are generally standard practice. If you decide to tip, around 10% of the total bill is acceptable.

On the first day of your trip, your trip leader may discuss the idea of running a group tipping kitty to which everybody contributes an equal amount at the start of the trip. Your trip leader then uses this to tip drivers, local guides, and hotel staff on your behalf. In Egypt, this can be beneficial as it is hard to break large bills and get small change for tips.

If you wish to take a picture of a market vendor, artisan products, etc., expect to be asked for a tip.

Tipping a porter who carries your luggage is also standard practice. A suggested amount to tip luggage porters is  $1 – $2 USD (50 ~ 100 EGP).

Tipping your trip leader: If you feel he/she did an exceptional job, then you can tip around 80 – 150 USD at the end of your trip based on past travelers’ feedback.

For more information about tipping your trip leader, please see our blog on tipping your tour guide.

  12. We recommend having access to anywhere between $400 – 700 USD either in cash or by credit/debit card. We strongly advise budgeting more than you plan to spend in case of an emergency.

As most components of your trip have been prepaid, you will only need money for lunches and dinners and any optional activity you may want to participate in. If you are an avid shopper or enjoy a cocktail in the evening, these costs are incurred at your own expense.

  13. Your cell phone may work in Egypt. When using your phone overseas, be sure to check with your provider to get informed about data and call roaming prices. When you land in Egypt, you will usually get a message from your provider that will give you the price of data, calls, and texts in that country. See the example below:

Welcome to Egypt! Your plan gives you unlimited data at up to 2G speeds and texts at no extra cost. Calls at 20 cents/min. Want our fastest data and unlimited calls? Get an International Pass for just $5/day.

You may consider contacting your service provider to learn about what kind of international plans they offer for calls, texts, and data.

*NOTE: Even with an international plan, phone coverage is slow and inconsistent all over Egypt. Expect limited or no coverage in remote and mountainous areas.

  14. All hotels you will be staying at (except the Nile cruise)* offer free Wifi as will some restaurants and other public places. *On the cruise, free Wifi is available in the lobby area and lounge, you can purchase a daily Wifi card for an additional charge if you need wifi in your room. Please keep in mind that the internet may not be as fast as you’re used to and could be spotty if not absent in more remote areas.

In more rural areas like on the Nile, Wifi can be spotty, weak or completely absent and will likely not work in your hotel room. Be prepared to ‘disconnect’ when traveling in the rural areas of Egypt.

  15. In Egypt, the most common outlet fits European pin plugs also known as the standard “Euro” outlet (see picture below). Egypt operates on 230V and 50Hz. Converters and/or adapters might be necessary for your electronic devices.

  16. Temperatures in Egypt during all seasons will vary depending on the region, but are generally warm to hot during the day and cooler at night. Pack lightweight clothing and don’t forget your sunscreen! Also note that in the desert, temperatures drop very low at night. Therefore, a warm coat/jacket is a must all year round. Please be aware that the weather across Egypt can be unpredictable so it is best to be prepared for extremes.

  17. Whether you travel in summer or wintertime, always bring a warm coat as temperatures in the desert can drop very low at night despite the warm/hot days. It is important to dress modestly in order to be respectful of the culture as well as to avoid unwanted attention.

As a tourist, you are not expected to dress like the locals. However, it’s best to dress appropriately to be respectful of local customs and to avoid unwanted attention. You can wear whatever you feel comfortable and cool in. We recommend avoiding very short shorts, showing cleavage, and tight or revealing clothing.

Below are a few things that we suggest bringing to make your trip more comfortable:

    • Sunglasses/hat
    • Flashlight/headlamp
    • Umbrella (for shade)
    • Head scarf (for women when visiting mosques)
    • Light clothing covering knees and shoulders (Egypt is a Muslim country so please respect local customs)
    • Lip balm (it gets dry in the desert!)
    • Warm coat (for cool nights & optional hot air balloon ride)
    • Jacket/cardigan (for cool nights)
    • Bathing suit & cover-up
    • Comfortable walking shoes (with good ankle support)
    • Flip flops/sandals
    • Sunscreen (biodegradable if possible)
    • Diarrhea, constipation
    • Motion sickness medicine (if needed)
    • Any prescription medication and over-the-counter medicine
    • First aid kit (travel size)
    • Insect repellent
    • Hand sanitizer
    • Washcloth (for hotel showers, if needed)
    • Small backpack or across-the-shoulder bag for the day
    • Walking sticks (if needed to walk on uneven terrain)
    • Mask (for dusty or sandy visits)
    • Adapters/converters for electronics (bring 2 or more just in case!)
    • Shampoo/conditioner/soap*

*All hotels will have a hairdryer and a toiletries kit but if you want extra shampoo, conditioner, or soap, you can bring your own.

  18. Almost all of the hotels on this trip offer laundry services for a fee if needed. It is best to give laundry to the hotel staff in the morning and it is usually ready by the next day.

  19. It is not advisable to drink the tap water in Egypt. Bottled water is readily available for a small fee at restaurants, hotels, cafes, stores, and kiosks.

To alleviate the plastic waste epidemic, we recommend a reusable filtered water bottle like LifeStraw or Grayl. This is a small role we can play in the solution to the plastic epidemic.

Another thing you can do to help is to put purchased items in your day pack/backpack rather than using the plastic bag that the store provides you. Small things can add up to make a big difference!

  20. Most areas of Egypt that you will visit on this trip experience less crime compared to the bigger cities such as Cairo. During your time in the larger cities, it is suggested to travel in groups of two or more even though it is very unlikely that you will face any violence.

As with any travel destination, it is important to be aware of your surroundings with a secure over-the-shoulder day pack that closes tightly. This way your belongings won’t easily become the property of any purse snatchers or pickpockets. Situations such as those just mentioned are most common in larger cities or at famous attractions where large numbers of Egyptians and tourists tend to congregate.

  21. Hotels and restaurants throughout Egypt offer a wide variety of foods. When making your reservation, please notify us of your specific requests such as gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, etc. Alternative options will always be possible throughout the trip though they might be limited.

  22. Please review the CDC Health Information for Travelers Website before traveling to Egypt to see any recommended vaccinations.

If you suffer from pre-existing medical conditions or are concerned about what vaccinations may be right for you, we strongly advise that you visit a medical professional or your personal physician before your trip.

  23. We offer private trips to Egypt depending on the size of the group and availability.

Please reach out to us at info@globe-drifters.com for more information.

In Egypt, you will be spending 3 nights on a Nile River cruise boat and 7 nights in hotels. In Egypt, the term ‘5-star’ does not have the same meaning as it does in the West. All of our hotels and the cruise are premium accommodations where you will be very comfortable and have access to high-quality facilities and amenities.

Cairo

This five-star hotel features breathtaking views of the Giza Pyramids and boasts an outdoor pool and two restaurants that offer delicious Peruvian and Japanese cuisine.

Aswan

A fine hotel offering a blend of comfort and Egyptian hospitality. With its prime location along the Nile, comfortable accommodations, stunning views, excellent dining options, and a range of leisure facilities, it is a perfect place from which to explore Aswan’s history and beauty.

*Arrival in Cairo on Day 10 will be in the late afternoon/early evening. Unless you’ve planned to extend your stay in Egypt, most travelers will depart the next day. For this reason, we have selected to stay at an airport hotel on the last night of your trip so you don’t have to deal with the chaotic traffic jams in downtown Cairo on your way back to the airport on departure day.

We recommend that you purchase trip/travel insurance for your trip. We work with Travelex, which offers travel protection plans to help protect you and your travel investment against the unexpected. Travel protection plans include coverage for trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical, emergency evacuation/repatriation, trip delay, baggage delay, and more. Otherwise, you are welcome to shop around online for a provider and policy that best suits your needs.
